Ameyo Under Probe Over Anglo Leasing East African Standard 20 08 2004 Page: 40
The Government is investigating Postmaster General Dan Ameyo’s alleged link to the Anglo-leasing scandal, a minister confirmed yesterday. Though not explicit, Mr Raphael Tuju, who holds the Information and Communications portfolio said anybody who dealt with the matter was being investigated.
Tuju, however, maintained that Ameyo would remain the Postmaster-General until the investigations are complete. "He (Ameyo) has not been suspended, until he gets a letter from the Head of the Public Service (Francis Muthaura)," said Tuju. Ameyo is alleged to have handled Anglo Leasing documents at one point during his stint at the Attorney-Generals Chambers.
He was mentioned alongside David Onyonka who at the time was in charge of the National Debt Management Office and Mr John Angili, formerly at the Treasury but now in the Energy Ministry. The trio are said to have handled files that led to the Government paying Sh241 million in a shady CID forensic laboratory construction deal that would have resulted in the Government losing a cool Sh4 billion.
Yesterday, Tuju said the decision to retain Ameyo was reached after mutual agreement between himself and Muthaura. He said there was no working conflict between Muthaura and himself. "Contrary to this report, we work well together and I have great respect for him," said Tuju. He was speaking at a specially arranged Press conference in his CCK office yesterday.
But even as Tuju was speaking, it emerged that indeed, Ameyo did not report to Office yesterday. And as Tuju is fronting for the return of Ameyo, the Postmaster’s problems appeared to multiply with the corporation’s union calling for his sacking
The unionisable workers said Ameyo’s continued presence in the Postal Corporation of Kenya "was not in the best interest of the organisation." They claimed Ameyo had sacked over 200 of their members since he became Postmaster General because of alleged misconduct while on duty.
