Githongo To Appear Before PAC East African Standard 27 June 2004 Page: 5
Ethics and Governance PS John Githongo is expected to appear before the Public Accounts Committee for the second time tomorrow over the unresolved saga of the mysterious Anglo Leasing Company.
Githongo is expected to shed more light on the twin scandals of passport and forensic laboratory tenders that were to be undertaken by the company.
A member of the PAC said more government officials, including those who had testified earlier, would be required to testify again.
"We gave them an opportunity to go and look for more information and give it to us. There are things some of them were hearing for the first time when they appeared before the committee. They are to come and tell us what they have found out," the official said.
"We are not through with this thing. PAC is moving on. Maybe towards the end of the week, we will be able to see clearly the pattern in this thing," he said.
The last time Githongo appeared before the committee, he reportedly presented his findings, which dismissed Anglo Leasing as a non-existent firm.
The investigations continue despite the governments stand that its officials involved in the deal committed no offence.
On Tuesday, the government cleared ministers and permanent secretaries mentioned in the Sh4 billion forensic science laboratory contract.
Head of Public Service Francis Muthaura said the governments investigations had not established any wrongdoing or irregularities on the part of the ministers and the permanent secretaries.
Muthaura said there was no evidence to warrant the sacking or institution of disciplinary action against the ministers or secretaries mentioned in the media in connection with procurement for the police project.
But PAC sources said investigations into the scam are going on, arguing that the government’s statement did not end the inquiry.
